Number 207 (Red over Dark Blue on Dark Gray) by Mark Rothko

The painting "Number 207 - Red on top of Dark Blue on Dark Gray" is placed in the most prominent place - in the center of the main hall. A witty idea of the film director is that the picture was deliberately hung upside down, hinting at the personal qualities of the billionaire and his attitude to art. Number 207 is a wonderful example of Rothko's unique style: color fields in the form of rectangles and stripes, emphasizing large areas of color, applied in thin flat layers.

In This Case by Jean-Michel Basquiat

Jean-Michel Basquiat, a close friend of Andy Warhol, takes rank as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. The artist died at the age of 27, leaving behind few artworks, which made his paintings even more valuable and desirable to collectors. He painted “In This Case” in 1983 and completed his series of large abstract paintings of a skull. In 2021, “In This Case” was sold for a staggering $93 mln.

Nichols Canyon by David Hockney

The artist born in Great Britain first came to California in 1963, and bought a house on the famous Hollywood Hills in 1978. The view from the top of the hills, where his house is located, inspired him to depict the winding road going through the neighborhood. Hockney is best known for his portraits, landscapes and pools of Los Angeles, and is one of the most expensive living artists today thanks to the sale of "A Pool with Two Figures" for $90 mln. However Nichols Canyon is unanimously regarded as his first mature piece of art.

Absinthe by Edgar Degas

The location of these two works of art opposite each other is probably not a simple coincidence, since Degas and his contemporaries are recognized without exaggeration as pioneers of modern art of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and had a substantial impact on Matisse's style. At the same time, the paintings are so dissimilar that this weird choice of a place also emphasizes the personality, intellectual level and taste of Miles Bron.

Icarus by Henri Matisse

A more detailed insightful description of Icarus’s creation and significance in Matisse’s legacy can be found in another article of our blog: EXPLORING THE BEAUTY OF 10 HENRI MATISSE PAINTINGS

The Joy of Life by Henri Matisse

Matisse's use of bright, seemingly incongruous colors and simple forms made his works incredibly popular. "The Joy of Life" is displayed in one of the guest rooms and represents an association with the "Fauvist" and "wild" lifestyle, which Miles keeps to.

Untitled (Bacchus) by Cy Twombly

Cy Twombly's style is characterized by large-scale calligraphic and abstract paintings created under the influence of classical art, because the artist derived inspiration from the ancient Greek and Roman myths. Evidently, the image in Untitled is associated with the splashed red wine or blood on the walls of the room, where Bacchus worshippers could perform their rituals.

 Neoplasticism by Piet Mondrian

The Dutch abstract painter Piet Mondrian pioneered a new trend in abstract art of using only vertical and horizontal lines, and called it Neoplasticism. He invented a term adopted worldwide but eventually, we can see application of his ideas and style only in interior design, not in visual art. The story of Miles Bron’s up and down is similar, in a way. At the same time, this very abstract painting was auctioned in autumn, 2022, and sold at $51mln, which is a record for Mondrian’s paintings.

Three Studies of George Dyer by Francis Bacon

The film also has a reference to "Three Etudes of George Dyer" by Francis Bacon. This quaint series of portraits was created when Bacon was struggling to reconcile himself with the death of his lover and muse, George Dyer, a petty criminal who committed suicide. But here, in the same style, we see the portrait of the clown Ronald McDonald, a long-time mascot of the McDonald's fast-food restaurant chain. He lives in his fictional world of McDonaldland, together with his friends Mayor McCheese, the Hamburglar, Grimace, Birdie the Early Bird and The Fry Kids. Remarkably, one of the main female characters in the film has a nickname Birdie, too.

Many thanks for reading the article, dear art lover. Good luck with the quiz! Looking forward to photos from you!
